And just like that, we’re 30 days away from the first day of summer. And, you know what that means... Time to start making summer plans! In addition to mandatory beach days and long awaited exotic vacations, the Ford is the perfect place to be in the summer. Imagine… a warm evening, good friends, a delicious picnic, incredible entertainment and YOU! Sounds perfect, right? All you need to do now is decide what to see. We know there’s a lot to choose from, so we asked some of our staffers what they’re most looking forward to this summer.
Program Coordinator Leanna Bremond’s summer picks include three shows that celebrate strong black female voices: highly acclaimed vocalist and bassist Meshell Ndegeocello, GRAMMY ®-nominated duo (and Prince protégés) We Are KING, and dance icons Urban Bush Women’s Hair & Other Stories – a multidisciplinary experience blending dance-theatre with conversations that challenge existing American values and explore perceptions of beauty, identity and race. While all of these artists come from different places, span multiple generations, and embrace vastly different arts practices, they all produce work that inspires audiences to investigate identity and celebrate black culture.
Box Office Manager Ann Jensen's perfect picks include SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Game Changers because there’s nothing like a movie night under the stars with fantastic sound, a place to sit, and cup holders! Also on her list are [UP]RISING -- An Afro-Future Jazz Her-Story, which celebrates the next generation of jazz featuring an exciting roster of women with South African influences; Rock Out 5!, a classic rock ‘n’ roll concert benefitting Jail Guitar Doors, ‘cause you never know who might drop in to jam with Wayne Kramer (past surprise guests have included Tom Morello, Jackson Browne and Ben Harper); and Hassan Hajjaj: My Rock Stars Experimental – Live, a show that blends visual arts, textile design, and contemporary Moroccan musicians. This last entry, an art installation meets live concert curated by Hassan Hajjaj will look so stunning, it might just upstage our gorgeous natural backdrop.
By the way, did you know that if you purchase tickets to three or more shows, you’ll save 20% off the ticket price! But the best thing about having a subscription to the Ford’s season, according to Ann, is the chance to make the best little outdoor theatre in LA your home away from home. And with all of our stairs, you can even let your gym membership lapse. So go ahead, see all the shows and enjoy summer nights at the Ford.
